Nutrition and Diabetes Services

Diabetic Clinic

 
  1 Step one of the Clinic provides detailed individual meal planning with a Registered Dietitian, as well as a full assessment and teaching with a Registered Nurse. Topics, which are discussed briefly, are prevention and treatment of hyper/hypoglycemia, medication timing, foot care and basic exercise guidelines.

   
     
  1 Step two of the Clinic is a group class that teaches additional skills to manage Diabetes day-to-day. This course is taught by one of the Clinic's trained professionals and provides information on recipe modification, dining out, label reading, carbohydrate counting , as well as how to manage blood sugars day to day to reduce incidence of complications from uncontrolled diabetes.

   
     
  1 Meter Instruction appointments are available with a Registered Nurse who provides information on the proper usage, storage, and cleaning of any blood glucose monitor.

 
     
  1 Insulin Injection Instruction appointments are available with a Registered Nurse who provides hands-on techniques teaching patients and families to administer insulin injections. During these sessions information on the prevention and treatment of low blood sugar is provided.  
     
  1 Gestational Diabetes Instruction appointments are available through the clinic. This appointment provides detailed meal planning with a Registered Dietitian, as well as a full assessment and teaching with a Registered Nurse. The Diabetic Clinic offers a Meter Loaner Program that allows the gestational patient to "borrow" a blood glucose meter during the pregnancy.

The Nutrition and Diabetes Services Department at Wooster Community Hospital is comprised of qualified professionals who are specifically trained to provide services to individuals or groups who require education on Diabetes or any health condition which may be treated or prevented with nutrition intervention.

All services of the department require a Physician's referral and the cost will vary. Insurance coverage also varies with each insurer. The department will be glad to provide you with supportive information to submit required documentation to your insurance company.

Diabetes Services,available through the Diabetic Clinic, provides the necessary education to patients and families for the day-to-day management of Diabetes. The Clinic involves a two-step process and is designed to meet the individual needs of each participant.

 
       
  arrow   Carbohydrate Counting appointments are available to those Diabetics who have mastered their meal planning guidelines and desire advanced information regarding blood glucose control. A Registered Dietitian provides these instructions.
       
  arrow   Nutrition Services offers diet education suitable to any special nutritional need. Our qualified staff of Registered Dietitians provides a high level of education to patients and families requiring this service.
       
  arrow   WHY WEIGHT - weight loss program is a low-cost, safe and effective weight loss program developed for use at Wooster Community Hospital. Diet, exercise and behavior modification assist with weight loss and keeping it off for life.

This six-month program is individualized for each participant and the "portion control" plan uses every day foods with no need to count calories. When used with exercise as recommended, the plan allows for slow gradual weight loss while meeting nutritional needs.

Individual Counseling by a Registered Dietitian is available for outpatient services. Although the qualified staff can provide information for any health condition which requires nutrition intervention some areas of specific interest include diet therapy for hypertension or high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, heart disease, kidney disease, gastrointestinal diseases such as diverticulitis, diverticulosis, colitis, celiac sprue, reflux disease, osteoporosis, nutritional needs during pregnancy, diabetes, hypoglycemia, weight loss, gout, vegetarianism, sports nutrition, and pulmonary disease.

Counseling is also available for our pediatric population.
