1 Wireless technology allows Wooster Community Hospital's Endoscopy Department personnel to measure the amount of acid in a patient's digestive tract and aid in diagnosing certain medical conditions.

1 The Bravo pH monitoring system, surpasses a previous system that was meant to measure the acidity in the digestive tract.

"We had a test to evaluate patients, but it was not very sensitive," said Dr. Vincent Jabour, a Wooster Gastroenterologist and Chairman of the Hospital's Endoscopy Department.

1 Diane Field, RN, explained patients formerly would have a tube threaded down their nose, with a capsule at the end of the tube that would then be attached where the stomach and esophagus meet. That capsule would measure levels of acidity. Few patients were willing to go about their normal day with the discomfort of having a tube down their nose, Jabour said. Thus, accurate results were often difficult to obtain.

The new system eliminates the tube, making a normal day more possible, and as such returning accurate results. Doctors can determine if pain is being caused by acid reflux, which Jabour said is very common, or heart trouble.

The new system is state of the art and puts Wooster Community Hospital on the same level of much larger hospitals. "We have equipment here found only at major university hospitals," Jabour said. "Wooster is the first community hospital in Ohio to offer this new technology."

It was Field and her staff that came across and researched the new technology and brought it to the attention of the doctors in the endoscopy department. Jabour said the Cardiology Department also will find great use of the Bravo pH system. "I think we're going to see a wide variety of uses for this technology at our hospital," he said.
