Imagine our surprise when the hospital received beautiful flowers from a patient's family. Could it be a mistake? Not at all! The beautiful flower arrangement was from Tom Poulson, a grateful family member.

  Tom Poulson

1 The same weekend we were preparing for the Community Open House for The Women's Pavilion and Progressive Care Unit, Tom's mother-Sadie Poulson-was admitted to Wooster Community Hospital for tests and evaluation. As Dr. Bonezzi and a team of nurses cared for Sadie, Tom observed the excellent "couple care" that took place in the hospital room. Tom was very appreciative that not only his mother received the best care, but that his diabetic father was also in good hands. The staff checked on his father and mother, explained medical procedures clearly to both of them and encouraged Russ Poulson to take advantage of the dietitian approved, diabetic guest meals. It was essential for Russ to take good care of himself so that he could be prepared for Sadie to return home. "The combination of warm, personal care and the level of technology all close to home is what makes Wooster Community Hospital such an asset to our community," said Tom.

As a community leader, Tom is proud of the investments that the hospital has made to serve the community. "Local healthcare in our community is so important," emphasized Tom. As a member of Smithville Village Council, Chamber Board of Director for Orrville and Chair of the Planning Commission for Smithville, Tom is very aware of good customer service and giving back to the community. He feels WCH always does what is BEST for the patient in a compassionate manner. So it shouldn't have been a surprise when he wanted to congratulate us on "our new arrival that would assist with new arrivals-babies". For Tom, it was a way to help celebrate a momentous addition to the hospital and show his appreciation for taking such good care of his parents.

Jack and Jane

arrow Meet Jack and Jane Craig: married for 53 years, parents of four adult children, grandparents of six, breeders of show quality Welsh ponies, and among the nicest people you will find in Wayne County.

Born and raised in the Cleveland area, Jack's love affair with horses started at the age of seven when he got his pony, Babe. Always the good salesman, Jack petitioned his suburban Cleveland neighborhood to allow him to keep the pony in his own backyard. One pony inevitably led to another and soon his parents found themselves moving further out into the country so their son could have more space for his four-legged friends.

Jack knew it would be necessary to work hard to be able to maintain his passion for horses. He graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College, then served in the Army during the Korean War as a counter-intelligence agent. After the service he worked for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. in the Economic Development and Governmental Affairs departments, and eventually became a successful breeder of quality Welsh ponies.

Upon retiring from the Illuminating Co. the Craigs moved their ponies to the Wooster area to be near their grandchildren. Soon after, Jack went to work again as the first Director of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce. When he left there to have his first total knee replacement he decided Wooster Community Hospital was the place he would have it done. Since he had visited WCH for minor injuries in the past he already knew of the excellent care and personal touch WCH offered the community.

Now Jack is with the Wayne County Convention & Visitors Bureau. In 2006, within five months of each other, Jack underwent two major surgeries--carotid artery surgery and a second total knee replacement. Since Jack had gone to WCH for his previous knee replacement the decision to return to the hospital for both of these operations was easy. He experienced again what he describes as "A community hospital that has the community at heart."

"We wouldn't think of going anywhere else, everything we need is right here, near home" explained Jane. Jack elaborated, "I wouldn't be here today without the top-notch care I received at WCH." He credits alert, expert care on the part of his doctors (Dr. Ray Mason, Dr. Robert Cebul, Dr. Cyril Ofori and Dr. James Gesler) and quality care from the nursing staff for his speedy recovery. "The staff took excellent care of both of us, they treated us like family," said Jack.

Following his knee surgery he chose the re-habilitation facilities at WCH HealthPoint and the capable, friendly staff there are making it possible for him to be out in the barn with his beloved ponies once more.

Looking out their family room window at the picture-perfect view of the dream they have built together--Tarry-A-Bit--Jack and Jane both hope to do just that for many years to come.

Who Is at Risk?

Sometimes when you want it the least, your body needs it the most.  When you feel tired, worn out and stressed out, the last thing you feel like doing is driving down to your health club for an intense workout.  The fact is, this is exactly what you should do.
